Airport security: Which areas you can protect with modern access control
Comprehensive solutions for airport access control secure the airside and landside of airports. The airport site is basically divided into a landside and an airside area. Access or entry in both directions is strictly monitored. Whether employees, passengers and visitors or service providers: an airport is entered and left by tens of thousands of people every day. They all have different access rights to the airport areas. These individual zones, in turn, are prioritised differently in terms of security - an airport is a complex system; airport security is paramount in business operations. In this context, access control at the airport as well as hazard management on the airside and landside must be carried out in such a way that day-to-day business literally remains in (travel) flow, even with the highest passenger volumes. With the Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) pSM , all security systems such as access control or fire alarm technology are bundled on one platform and all important areas of an airport are reliably protected. This includes, for example, the airport building itself, the various gates, access to aircraft or to highly secured zones such as the tower. Electronic access control solutions, video surveillance as well as alarm and intrusion detection systems ensure maximum security. In the event of an emergency, all relevant processes are automated: from the triggered alarm to locked fire doors and open escape routes to the notification of emergency services.
A functioning access control system using access control devices, readers, biometrics as well as digital cylinders is essential for airport security to control the transitions between landside and airside. While the landside of an airport includes all publicly accessible areas such as the car parks or the terminal entrance area, the airside includes all security areas of an airport - from the waiting area at the gate to the apron and the aircraft. This is where all the processes take place that are necessary for the take-off and landing of aircraft as well as for their handling. Travellers and staff wishing to change from landside to airside must pass through the appropriate security checks. The German Aviation Security Act (LuftSig) regulates passenger and baggage checks as well as the self-security of all security areas in the form of personnel and goods checks. The checks are a prerequisite for being allowed to enter the security area from the airport in the first place.
Airport areas reserved exclusively for staff must be secured again separately. The identities of staff - both those boarding and ground staff - must be checked to control access to particularly sensitive areas or restricted zones.
